It has been pointed out to me that the Fresno Chinatown had a lot of Japanese living there. So there would have been a mix of Chinese and Japanese artifacts and collectables coming from Fresno digs. It would be impossible to tell if any of them had Chinese usage or not. Also, it has been pointed out to me that the Chinese and Japanese often used the same stores, especially in cases where there was only one store in the area, either Chinese or Japanese which would have been common. I'm sure there are a lot of other situations where those two cultures overlapped as to their usage of containers and other items which are now collectables.

The bottle hunters and diggers didn't differentiate. They dug ALL bottles and had no way of discriminating between Chinese and Japanese artifacts. These were all grouped together and sold under "chinese bottles". You could go to any of the numerous bottle swap meets or sales and nothing was ever identified as Japanese. Both used much the same characters on their bottles and other collectables so to the untrained eye (theirs and mine) they were all Chinese.

The theme of this collection has been Chinese over the years and 99% of the collection is authentically Chinese. However, a few items have been identified as Japanese. As mentioned elsewhere, these items will remain in the collection.
